A fitness room with treadmills and weight machines facing floor-to-ceiling windows

Gyms, studios and fitness clubs

Gym scenting that works with your ventilation, not instead of it.

A fresh scent at the front desk that sells memberships, and scheduled units in the locker rooms that keep up between cleans.

The short answer

How do gyms keep from smelling?

Gyms that smell good run strong exhaust in locker rooms and showers, clean mats, benches and drains daily, control humidity, and then use a scheduled scent system for the front desk and locker rooms. Nēbu 360's NL360 Wall Unit ($110) covers a locker room or studio up to 400 sq ft on batteries, and an NL2500 ($1,299) on the HVAC covers an open training floor up to 90,000 cubic feet.

Nēbu 360, a commercial scenting company in Lake Park, Florida, installs and refills gym systems in Palm Beach, Broward and Martin counties and ships nationwide.

Where the smell comes from

Why do gyms smell?

Sweat in soft surfaces

Mats, bench padding, carpet and towels hold it. Daily wipe-downs and a laundry schedule matter more than anything on the wall.

Wet rooms that never dry

Showers and sauna areas in a humid climate. Exhaust fans need to run long after the last member leaves.

Rubber flooring

New rubber off-gasses for weeks. Ventilate hard during that period; scent will only mix with it.

Drains and lockers

Dry drain traps and closed lockers with forgotten kit. Water the traps, prop lockers open overnight.

Choosing the scent

What is a good gym scent?

Cool, green and citrus. Sweet scents mixed with sweat smell worse than either alone. Our gym picks:

Schedule units to run at full level from opening to the evening peak, then lower. Set studio units off during classes if members are on the floor near them.

Who looks after it

Locker rooms on autopilot.

A gym with six small rooms (two locker rooms, two restrooms, a studio and a sales office) in Palm Beach, Broward or Martin County can put them all on Room-by-Room Scenting at $1 per room per day, about $180 a month, with refills and batteries handled by us. Condo and HOA fitness rooms work the same way. See the service area.

Gyms and franchise locations elsewhere buy units outright, with free shipping anywhere in the US and oil at $35 for 100 ml. For restroom-specific advice see commercial bathroom air fresheners.

Questions

Gym owners ask.

What is the best air freshener for a gym locker room?

A scheduled wall unit with a cool, fresh scent, placed high near the exhaust path, combined with exhaust fans that run well after closing. The Nēbu 360 NL360 costs $110, covers up to 400 sq ft and runs on batteries, so it suits locker rooms without convenient outlets.

How do I get rid of gym smell?

Clean and dry the sources: daily disinfection of mats and benches, a towel and laundry routine, water in floor drains, and exhaust running long enough to dry showers. Scent then keeps the gym pleasant between cleanings; on its own it will not remove sweat or mildew odor.

Will scent bother members during workouts?

It can if it is strong, which is why we keep the training floor at a light background level, scent locker rooms and the front desk more clearly, and schedule studio units off during classes.

How much does it cost to scent a gym?

Owned: $110 per NL360 for small rooms, $799 for an N250 at the front desk, $1,299 or $1,999 for an HVAC unit on the floor, plus oil from $35. Serviced in Palm Beach, Broward and Martin counties: $1 per small room per day, two rooms minimum.
