Hotels, resorts and boutique hotels

Hotel scenting: the lobby scent guests remember after checkout.

Zoned by lobby, corridors and spa, run through the air handlers, and kept topped up so the arrival smells the same on a Tuesday in August as on opening night.

The short answer

How do hotels scent their lobbies?

Most hotels scent the lobby with a cold-air diffuser connected to the HVAC, which turns fragrance oil into a dry mist and lets the air handler carry it through the space. Nēbu 360's NL2500 Single ($1,299, 2.5 L reservoir) covers up to 90,000 cubic feet, and the NL5000 Dual / HVAC ($1,999, two 2.5 L reservoirs) covers up to 180,000 cubic feet, enough for a resort atrium from one point on the ductwork.

Nēbu 360, a commercial scenting company in Lake Park, Florida, installs and services hotel systems in Palm Beach, Broward and Martin counties, with a free 14-day trial for new hotels there, and ships systems to hotels anywhere in the US.

Zones

Which areas of a hotel get scented?

Hotels are scented in zones, each with its own unit, intensity and schedule. The guest should feel one property, not five air fresheners.

A bright hotel corridor with guest room doors

A wall-mounted scent unit in a marble hotel restroom
Public restrooms

Lobby and front desk

The signature lives here, at its strongest during check-in hours. The NL5000 or NL2500 on the lobby air handler.

Elevator lobbies and corridors

The same scent, lower. This is the handoff that tells a guest they are still in your hotel on the eighth floor.

Spa, fitness and pool

Often a second, lighter scent. See spa and salon scenting.

Back of house

Trash rooms and service corridors next to guest areas get small wall units on a schedule.

Signature or library

Does a hotel need a signature scent?

Not to start. A signature scent is a fragrance only your property uses; a library scent is one chosen from an existing range. Most independent and boutique hotels begin with a library scent, live with it for a season, and only then decide whether a bespoke one is worth the cost and the minimums. Ask us if you are considering a signature.

Our library of 43 oils includes a hotel-inspired family. Five that work in lobbies:

  • White Tea: green tea and citrus, the classic clean-luxury lobby.
  • Black Tie: lemon, bergamot and black fig over a freesia heart, for evening-led properties.
  • Prestige: bright citrus and ocean notes for beachfront arrivals.
  • Dream Weaver: white tea, aloe and ginger warming into cedar. Spa-adjacent.
  • Miami Serenity: leather, cardamom and sandalwood for a bar-and-lounge lobby.

Coastal Florida hotels have one particular issue: humidity and open doors. A lobby that opens to a pool deck loses scent every time the doors part, which is a reason to place the unit on the air handler rather than near the entrance.

Sizing

How many scent machines does a hotel need?

Count air handlers and cubic feet, not rooms. A 6,000 sq ft lobby with 18 ft ceilings holds 108,000 cu ft of air: one NL5000, or one NL2500 if the lobby has its own smaller air handler.

Space Typical unit Coverage Price
Resort atrium, grand lobby, ballroom pre-function NL5000 Dual / HVAC Up to 180,000 cu ft $1,999
Boutique hotel lobby, restaurant floor NL2500 Single Up to 90,000 cu ft $1,299
Corridor run, elevator landing, spa reception without ducts N250 Wall Mount Up to 42,500 cu ft $799
Public restroom, fitness room, trash room NL360 Wall Unit Up to 400 sq ft $110

Run your numbers in the sizing tool, or send us the mechanical drawings and we will size it from those.

Questions

What hotel GMs and engineers ask.

What is hotel scenting?

Hotel scenting is the practice of diffusing one consistent fragrance through a hotel's lobby and public areas, usually through the HVAC system, so guests associate the scent with the property. It is typically zoned, with the strongest level in the lobby and lighter levels in corridors and amenities.

Does scent go into guest rooms?

Only if the unit is connected to an air handler that supplies guest rooms, and most hotels choose not to. We usually scent lobbies, corridors and public spaces and leave guest rooms unscented so guests control their own room.

How much oil does a hotel lobby use?

It depends on the lobby's air volume, the intensity setting and the hours it runs, so we measure it during the first month rather than guess. Nēbu 360 oil costs $65 for 250 ml and $99 for 500 ml, and the NL2500 holds 2.5 litres.

Can a hotel try scenting before buying?

Yes, if the hotel is new to Nēbu 360 and located in Palm Beach, Broward or Martin County, Florida. We install the system for a free 14-day trial with oil included, so management can judge the scent in the lobby rather than from a sample card.

Will scenting through the HVAC damage the system?

A cold-air diffuser adds a dry mist of fragrance at 0.2 to 8 grams per hour depending on the unit, with no water and no heat. We connect only with the chief engineer's sign-off, and the unit can be run standalone if the hotel prefers not to tie into the ductwork.
