Schools, colleges and universities

School and university scenting, done carefully.

Admissions offices, athletic locker rooms, residence hall lobbies and restrooms. Classrooms stay unscented unless the school decides otherwise.

The short answer

Should you use an air freshener in a classroom?

Usually not as a default. Students sit in a classroom for hours and some will be sensitive to fragrance, so most schools are better served by ventilation and cleaning in classrooms and a light, scheduled scent only in shared spaces such as admissions, front offices, restrooms and athletic locker rooms. If a school does scent a classroom, it should be at the lowest level, before and after class, with the teacher in control.

Nēbu 360, a commercial scenting company in Lake Park, Florida, supplies the units: the $110 NL360 for rooms up to 400 sq ft and the $799 N250 Wall Mount (500 ml, up to 42,500 cubic feet) for lobbies, with SDS and IFRA documentation for every fragrance on request.

Where it earns its place

Which campus spaces benefit from scent?

Admissions and welcome center

Families on a campus tour form an impression in the first room they enter. This is the brand moment for a school.

Athletic locker rooms

Shared, humid and heavily used. A cool scent on a schedule, after exhaust and cleaning do their part.

Residence hall lobbies

High traffic, food deliveries, laundry. Lobby only; student rooms are theirs.

Restrooms

Replace aerosol dispensers that run dry or get vandalized. See commercial bathroom air fresheners.

Front office and nurse's waiting area

Light and clean, or off. Ask your nurse first.

Arenas and alumni suites

Event-day scenting for hospitality areas. See venue scenting.

Practical on a campus

What makes a unit suitable for a school building?

  • Mounted high. The NL360 hangs from its wall bracket near the ceiling, out of easy reach of students.
  • No outlet needed. Two D batteries last about three to four months, so it can go where the air moves, not where the socket is.
  • Scheduled. Up to five weekly schedules: on before first bell, off at weekends and over breaks.
  • No aerosol cans. One 100 ml oil bottle ($35) lasts about three months.

For a gym lobby, field house concourse or student center, step up to an N250 or an NL2500 on the HVAC. Size it with the sizing tool.

Policy first

How should a school decide on scent?

Involve the facilities director, the school nurse and, for K-12, the parents' association before the first unit goes up. Agree which spaces are scented, the default level, and who to contact if a student or staff member reacts to it. Keep the oil's SDS with your other chemical records.

Our fragrance safety page has a sensitivity policy you can adapt. Choose clean, quiet scents: Soft Whisper Linen, White Tea, and Crisp Mint Eucalyptus for locker rooms.

Schools and universities in Palm Beach, Broward and Martin counties can have us install units over a break and refill them on a schedule, or put small rooms on Room-by-Room Scenting at $1 per room per day. Elsewhere, units and oil ship free anywhere in the US.

Questions

Facilities directors ask.

What is the best classroom air freshener?

For most classrooms the best option is fresh air: working ventilation, regular cleaning and windows where possible. If a school chooses to add scent, a scheduled wall unit at its lowest level, run before and after class and controlled by the teacher, is far better than plug-ins or sprays.

How do schools handle locker room odor?

With exhaust fans that run long after practice, daily cleaning of floors, benches and drains, and lockers aired out over weekends. A scheduled scent unit such as the $110 NL360 then keeps the room fresh between cleanings.

Are scent diffusers allowed in schools?

Rules vary by district and institution, so check your own policies first. Where scent is allowed, keep it to shared non-teaching spaces, at a low level, with SDS documentation on file and a clear way to turn it down or off.

Can units be switched off over school breaks?

Yes. Each Nēbu 360 unit runs on a weekly schedule set from a phone app, so it can be turned off for weekends, holidays and summer and restarted before term.
