Restaurants, bars and cafes
Restaurant scenting that never competes with the food.
The kitchen is your scent. What you control is the entry, the host stand, the hallway to the restrooms and the restrooms themselves.
The short answer
Should a restaurant use an air freshener?
Yes, but only away from the food. A restaurant should scent its restrooms, the corridor to them and sometimes the entry, and never the dining room or kitchen, where fragrance clashes with the menu. Nēbu 360's NL360 Wall Unit ($110) is a restaurant bathroom air freshener that covers up to 400 sq ft on batteries and a schedule, and in Palm Beach, Broward and Martin counties Nēbu 360 will run it for $1 per restroom per day.
Nēbu 360 is a commercial scenting company based in Lake Park, Florida, and ships units and oil free anywhere in the US.
Where, and where not
Which parts of a restaurant should smell of something other than food?
Restrooms
Always
The room guests judge your kitchen by. A scheduled NL360, set higher through the dinner rush. More in commercial bathroom air fresheners.
Entry, host stand, waiting bench
Sometimes
Useful when the entrance shares air with a fryer or dish pit, or in a hotel or mall restaurant with a lobby entry. Keep it light and citrus or tea, so it reads as clean, not perfumed.
Dining room and kitchen
Never
Fragrance in the dining room dulls the menu and annoys guests who came for the food. In the kitchen it sits near open food. The exception is a bar or lounge that does not serve food.

Smells that come with the trade
How do restaurants control odor?
Grease is the big one. A hood that is not cleaned on schedule, a filter left too long, or a grease trap pushes old-oil smell into the dining room, and no fragrance will fix it. Floor drains that dry out overnight send sewer gas into restrooms by morning service; pouring water down them is the cheapest fix in the building.
Bars have a different problem: beer and mop water in the mats by the well, and a sticky smell after close. Cleaning is the answer there too. Once the sources are handled, a light scent at the door and in the restrooms keeps the room smelling like a place someone cares about.
Broader guidance is on our commercial air freshener and odor control page.
Bars and lounges
What about a cocktail bar or hotel lounge?
With no kitchen to protect, a lounge can carry a real signature. Size it like a small lobby.
Lounge up to about 4,300 sq ft
N250 Wall Mount, $799, up to 42,500 cu ft.
Larger bar or club on its own air handler
NL2500 Single, $1,299, up to 90,000 cu ft.
Scents that suit a bar
Miami Serenity (leather, sandalwood), Midnight Luxe, Bohemian Whisper.
Scents for restrooms
Unsure what a space needs? The sizing tool does the volume math.
Local service
Two restrooms, about $60 a month, nobody on staff touches it.
Restaurants in Palm Beach, Broward and Martin counties can put their restrooms on Room-by-Room Scenting: $1 per room per day, two rooms minimum. We mount the units before service, set the schedule to your opening hours, and handle refills and batteries. Restaurant rows such as Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach are in our area; the rest is on the service area page.
Everywhere else in the US, buy the NL360 at $110 with free shipping and a 12-month warranty, and reorder 100 ml oil at $35.
Questions
Owners and managers ask.
What is the best restaurant bathroom air freshener?
A scheduled unit that runs only during opening hours and does not spray, such as the Nēbu 360 NL360 Wall Unit. It costs $110, covers up to 400 sq ft, runs on two D batteries or USB, and a 100 ml bottle of oil lasts about three months.
Is it safe to use a scent diffuser near food?
We recommend keeping fragrance out of the kitchen and dining room entirely. Cold-air diffusers produce a dry mist with no heat or water, but scent near food still affects taste and guest experience, so place units in restrooms, corridors and entries only.
Why does my restaurant restroom smell like sewage in the morning?
Usually a dry floor-drain trap letting sewer gas through overnight, or a failed wax ring at a toilet. Pour water into the drain, or install a trap primer, and have a plumber check the fixtures. Fragrance cannot fix it.
Can a bar have a signature scent?
Yes, if it does not serve much food. A lounge can run a warmer, more distinctive scent from an N250 Wall Mount or an NL2500 on the HVAC, scheduled to opening hours.
